Making a Label

The example label from this tutorial is based on label from Jokipiin Pellava, with their kind permission. Their logo and name are registered, and there is no point in copying their label, since copying their characteristic linen quality will be much more difficult...

First you have to make the image for the label. Label will contain the logo with the name of the company, origin of towel (Made in Finland) and the composition (linen pellava). You can scan in the business card to get the logo of the company. Load the scanned image in ArahPaint. Then press the rectangular selection icon 1K and select the area of the logo with mouse. Then activate function Edit > Picture size > Reduce to selected area.

First you have to reduce number of colors. In Color palette window press Edit > Set number of colors, and set it to two. After this operation, you will have just two colors in image: background and motif.

The size of the image should be calculated with respect of warp and weft density and desired size of the label. The size of the label is approximately 1.6x8.5 cm. Density in warp is 108 ends/cm and in weft 36 picks/cm. We calculate that the size should be about 176x320 pixels. In Edit > Picture size > Manually change set the picture width and height, enable Resize contents and press OK. You will get new picture with the correct size. If you will Set repeat size to the right values, you will be able to get fonts in correct width/height ratio. You can set Repeat dimensions in three different units:

  • picture size in millimeters
  • dpi (dots per inch)
  • weaving density (ends and picks per cm)
Use whichever unit you prefer, the other two will be calculated automatically. In this case, it is easier to set the size specified as weaving density, since we already know it. We will weave the label in vertical, but draw it in horizontal, since it is simpler to draw text this way. We will rotate it to weaving direction later on during weave insertion in ArahWeave.

Instead of manually correcting the scanned text, we can also insert it in ArahPaint. For text JOKIPIIN... you can use Adobe Utopia font and for text MADE IN FINLAND... you can use Helvetica. From toolbox select Text entry (icon with letter A). In window Font selector type in the text, choose font (Utopia - Adobe) and select desired size. Preview of the text is shown above the text line. If you do not like the size or type of font, you can change some of the parameters and check the preview again. Note that fonts are stretched according to the density of weaving. Then click OK. Text will be inserted in the image as a floating motif. Now you can drag and drop it on the desired place.

In this picture we will use three colors: one for ground, and two for different wefts.

When you have finished with drawing, save the image and open ArahWeave program. Choose Weave > Jacquard conversion. Load the image in Jacquard conversion window in Images > Load image. Rotate it by 90 degrees using Jacquard conversion > Images > label 06 1K. Select Extra wefts as the type of conversion; it is an option button on the left bottom of the window. Set System to 4 since we will use four different wefts in this label: one for ground, and three for extra wefts. Two wefts are used in full length of label so set Always to 2. Set Ground to 1, because you will use one ground weft. Set Skip to 7. This means that the program will not insert the weave points if the point would be closer than 7 threads to the border. We will get cleaner effects in this way.
Now you have to load a proper weave for each weft: for ground weft use plain weave, for three extra wefts use Satin 8. For attachment wefts on the back side of the label you can use Satin 24.

For every color you have to load four weaves - it is easier if you use right mouse button for copying weaves. After you have loaded all weaves and set all the parameters, press OK and you will get the jacquard weave. Program will multiply the weft size by 4, but will be smart enough not to insert weaves where they are not necessary. For this reason, we need to remove the unneeded wefts, which are floating across the full width of the fabric. The function is in Weave > Edit > Jacquard > Remove extra warps/wefts. At this point you will arrive at the final size of weave. The program automatically writes the correct weft pattern and puts the regulator on the right positions.

Now you have to prepare your sample for weaving. In Weave > Save cards for production you have to insert the layout according to your jacquard and loom. Be sure to set the correct number of hooks and Weft bytes with regulator on correct bit, according to the specifications of your loom.

To get the simulation, you have to enable Set weaving density > Density from technical data and you have to set the correct parameters in Thread pattern > Consumption.
